Ceramic Arts London - Andre Hess - Organelle 1 50x70x50cm

I make simple shapes that are both familiar and fugitive. Shapes that require the viewer to question what the pieces mean rather than what they resemble or represent. The making process itself informs the meaning of the work. I use any technique that fulfils the requirement. Surface treatment is minimal and serves only to qualify what is already there at the wet clay stage.

Organelles (of which the Mitochondrium is one) are functional structures found inside the nucleus of every living cell. The Mitochondrium is the one in which energy is generated, lending it the title of ‘Power-Station’ of the cell. All these structures have immense abstract sculptural quality.
