Kyriaki Gerontaki

I work with fine stoneware clay and hand throw all my pieces and fire them at 1200oC to 1250oC. I am attracted by the plasticity of the clay and I enjoy glazing experimentation and create my own colours. I hope that my understanding of the materials lends a richness and depth to the finished work.
The essential elements of my work are functionality and form.
My creative passion is subverting apparently familiar domestic objects to produce useful but sculptural pieces. I like to give a challenging invitation to the viewer to use their imagination to see how the pieces work. When used as tableware they become something new: adding an artistic element to serving and presenting food. As installations of three to five pieces they tell an interesting, playful story.
The objects all hold their own identity as useful, functional pieces which combine tradition and innovation.
