Susan O'Byrne

The animal form provides me with a canvas on which to portray human feelings in a highly expressive making process. The techniques I use have developed naturally from my drawings and collages. In three dimensions line becomes a wire skeleton and layers of collaged paper become printed and patterned pieces of porcelain.
The natural or accidental twists and kinks of the wire are allowed to dictate the posture of the animal and during firing the clay shrinks and tightens around its framework, accentuating a lineal, elongated awkwardness. These elements of chance and spontaneity are central to my work.
