Ceramic Arts London - Jack Doherty -

I make functional porcelain which ranges in scale from finely thrown tea cups to large slab plates and dishes. I enjoy the softness of porcelain clay and I use this quality to produce surfaces which are pierced, stretched or ribbed. The firing plays an important part in determining how my pots look. I spray a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and water into the kiln as the temperature is approaching white heat. The resulting vapour is drawn through the kiln chamber by the path of the flames. It flows around the work producing a soft, gentle glazed surface where it touches the pots. At Ceramic Art London I will be showing a new range of tea cups and a series of large individual dishes and wall pieces. Currently Chair of Ceramic Art London 2010 Organising Committee.
